Scope of Work:
Poor playing conditions and insufficient drainage on the football field at Westminster required total renovation of the field. Due to the sub-base’s inefficient drainage capacity, FIELDS removed the native soil as well as the existing turf. FIELDS put in new drainage, and root zone sand was installed to give the field a 6″ sand base, ensuring uniform field drainage rates. For the new turf, the team selected TifSport Bermudagrass. After installation, an intensive maintenance program accelerated growth and achieved establishment for the first event, held four weeks after installation in summer 2008.
The field was used for filming scenes of the 2009 movie “The Blind Side” starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, and Quinton Aaron.
In early fall of 2009, the newly renovated field was flooded three times. Nearby Nancy Creek reached record flood stage and 8 feet of water covered the field for four to five days. FIELDS was called in to restore the field from the silt left on the field and the aftereffects of sanitary sewer overflow. Due to concerns for player health and safety, the field was ground down to the Bermuda grass stolons to remove the silt, yet allow the roots to regrow the turf. After three mowings of the regrown turf, the grounds crew top-dressed the field with sand. The field was over-seeded with winter rye grass and was ready in time for soccer and lacrosse play.
