FIELDS Rebuilds Field Babe Ruth Played On As A Child

It all started here: Baltimore, Maryland in the early 1900’s. Babe Ruth was attending St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys and honing his skills to become, arguably, the greatest baseball player of all time. FIELDS, working in conjunction with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and a host of other donors, had the privilege to rebuild the former St. Mary’s field where “The Bambino” started his baseball career.

Babe Ruth went on to play professionally for 22 seasons, 15 of which were with the New York Yankees. He established many Major League Baseball batting records and was one of the five inaugural members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The newly renamed Babe Ruth Field at Gibbons Commons was designed for baseball and a host of other sports, the synthetic turf field features a digital scoreboard, bleachers, dugouts, backstop and goal posts at each end of the field. For this project, FIELDS’ work included a laser grading of the field subgrade, installation of synthetic turf and infill as well as the field’s fencing, gates, backstop and ball control netting.

“Working on a field like this is incredibly special for our entire team. Not only is it of great historical significance, but now it will provide a safe place for local children to be healthy and have fun,” says Brian Storm, President & CEO of Sports Fields, Inc.

Babe Ruth Field will be maintained by Saint Agnes Healthcare, who will work closely with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to implement character education programming and clinics. The Ripken Foundation has impacted over 1,000,000 youth in 49 states and 597 cities through their great work helping disadvantaged young people using baseball and softball-themed programs
